Apply now to new West CTA
Students entering the ninth or tenth grade next school year are encouraged to apply now for the new West Career and Technical Academy (11945 W. Charleston Blvd.). Scheduled to open next August, the West CTA curriculum focuses on environmental science, engineering, innovative business practices, energy conservation, advancements in health care and more. The programs are pre-professional in nature and are designed to prepare students for college and university study in areas that are growing and expanding nationally and globally. Apply online by the deadline of February 8, 2010, at 5 p.m.
“The W-CTA has a modern and rigorous curriculum, state-of-the-art classrooms, outstanding laboratory facilities and other advanced technologies,” said Principal Monte Bay. “There will be off-site experiences in real-life work environments such as visits to Red Rock and Lake Mead.”
The W-CTA learning environment, including honors and Advanced Placement (AP) courses, will prepare students for top colleges and universities. Students will be encouraged to take foreign language for three years. Other electives will be offered in program and non-program areas. Students may play sports at their home school.

NV Teacher of the Year
Tuesday afternoon, Kathleen Schaeffer, a math teacher at Bob Miller Middle School in Henderon, was surprised to learn that she had been named Nevada's Teacher of the year.
“As a school administrator, there is a no greater joy than witnessing the success of your students and faculty,” said Principal Tam Larnerd. “This year's recipient of the „Nevada Teacher of the Year‟ Award is a kind, caring, and dedicated teacher who has established herself as a leader at Miller Middle School and in the Clark County School District.”
With more than 22 years in the public education system, the award recipient has contributed her talents and programs to Bob Miller Middle School since its opening in 2000. She is a first-time winner of the “Nevada Teacher of the Year” honor.
The Nevada Department of Education “Nevada Teacher of the Year” is a statewide competitive application process that includes a lengthy essay and recommendations by peers, administration and parents.
Bob Miller Middle School is the only school in the state to have two award recipients of the “Nevada Teacher of the Year.” The first was in 2007 with reading teacher Melanie Teemant, who was there to congratulate Schaeffer.

Excellence in Education Hall of Fame Inductees
The Clark County School District presented six recipients with their induction into the Excellence in Education Hall of Fame. This honor recognizes individuals, departments, organizations and schools for their extraordinary contributions to the district’s educational mission.
The recipients include:
Clark County READS, literacy program by The Public Education Foundation
Dr. Janet Dobry, Principal, Robert Taylor Elementary School
Dr. Beverly Mathis, Principal, Kermit Booker Elementary School
Punam Mathur, Vice President, Human Resources, NV Energy
Diane Reitz, Director, K-12 Literacy, CCSD Curriculum and Professional Development Department
The School-Community Partnership Program Advisory Council.
“The Clark County School District is fortunate to have the dedication and efforts of these recipients,” said Dr. Walt Rulffes, Superintendent. “These six inductees exemplify the highest level of commitment to our mission of teaching and learning.”
Of the 35 nominations received, six were chosen based on criteria and judged by past Hall of Fame inductees. Criteria include, but are not limited to: Extraordinary and lasting contributions to education in CCSD. Proven significant impact on the improvement of student achievement. Unique and/or innovative approach to education.
Started in 1987, the Board of School Trustees approved the establishment of an Excellence in Education Hall of Fame display. The permanent display is mounted in the Edward A. Greer Education Center (2832 E. Flamingo Ave.). A total of 225 inductees’ names are included in the display.

Education Hall of Fame
CCSD Excellence in Education Hall of Fame nomination forms are now available. This annual award recognizes extraordinary and unique contributions to educational excellence in public schools. Employees, programs, departments, schools, citizens and community agencies that have made a significant and long-lasting impact on public education in Clark County are eligible.
